BHARGA

Bharga was a tribe of Kshatriyas and a Janpad mentioned by Panini (IV.1.178) as well as in Mahabharat (VI.10.49), (II.27.10). Bharg Janpad is mentioned in east along with Vatsa and Pundra Janpads.

History :

V. S. Agrawala writes that Ashtadhyayi of Panini mentions janapada Bharga, under Bhargadi (IV.1.178).

 

V. S. Agrawala writes that besides the Ayudhajivi Sanghas stated as such in the Ashtadhyayi, there were some other communities in Panini’s time, which as we know from other sources were republics. These include - Bharga (IV.1.178) – Panini refers to the Bhargas as a Kshatriya tribe. The Buddhist record mention them as a republic.

 

V. S. Agrawala writes about Civic status of women: women were distinguished as members of larger associations than the family. They were known by the Gotras and the janpads or states to which they belonged, e.g. Bhargi (of Bharga janpad, a part of Trigart Country).

 

V. S. Agrawala writes that The central portion of the Trigart formed by the Valley of the Beas was also named Kuluta (same as the Uluk of Sabha Parv (27.5-16), now known as the Kulu. Its ancient capital was at Nagar on the Beas. Mandamati was perhaps Mandi, lying to south of Kuluta. Panini mentions special mention of Bhargayana (Bhargayana) Gotra in the Trigarta Country (IV.1.111).

 

In Mahabharat :

Bharga is mentioned in Mahabharat (VI.10.49), (II.27.10).

 

Bhism Parv, Mahabharat / Book VI Chapter 10 describes geography and provinces of Bharatvarsh. Bharga is mentioned in the list of provinces along with Pundra in verse (VI.10.49).

 

Bhim's Conquests :

Bhim was sent out to the East, since Bhishma thought the easterners were skilled in fighting from the backs of elephants and in fighting with bare arms, he deemed Bhim to be the most ideal person to wage wars in that region. The Mahabharat mentions several kingdoms to the east of Indraprasth which were conquered by Bhim. According to Sabha Parv, Mahabharat / Book II Chapter 26 & Sabha Parv, Mahabharat / Book II Chapter 27 Bhimsen subjugated the countries including: Bhargas is mentioned in verse (II.27.10).
