CHEDI
Chedi
was an ancient Indian kingdom which fell roughly in the Bundelkhand
division of Madhya Pradesh regions to the south of river Yamuna
along the river Ken. Its capital city was called Suktimati in Sanskrit
and Sotthivati-nagara in Pali. In Pali-language Buddhist texts,
it is listed as one of the sixteen mahajanapadas ("great realms"
of northern and central India).

Jat
clan Chedi :
Chedi is gotra of Jats. This gotra is said to have started after
people of Chedi rulers in Bundelkhand on the banks of Ken River.
History
:
Google Scholar Reshma Rai shares that the Chedi territory corresponded
roughly to the eastern part of modern Bundelkhand. Pargiter places
Chedis along the south bank of the Yamuna from the Chambal on the
northwest to as far as Karvi on the south-east.
Its
limits southwards may have been the Plateau of Malwa and the hills
of Bundelkhand. Its capital was known as Sotthivati- nagar or Shuktimati
or Shukti-Sahvaya. Other important towns were Sahajati and Tripuri.
The
Chetiya Jataka traces the descent of Chedi kings from Mahasammat
and Mandhat. Upachar, a king of the line, had five sons who are
said to have founded the cities of Hatthipur (Hastinapur), Assapur
(in Ang), Sinhapur (Lala from where Vijaya went to Ceylon), Uttarapanchal
(Ahichchhatra) and Daddarapur (in the Himalayan region). Shishupal,
the legendary enemy of Krishna, was a Chedi king. However, except
these epic lengends nothing authentic is known about the Chedis.
Chedi
:
Vijayendra Kumar Mathur has written ... Chedi (AS, p.342) was the
name of Bundelkhand and neighboring states in ancient times. Chedi
Naresh Kashuchaidya is mentioned in the Rigved.
According
to Rappson the Kashu or Kasu is the Chediraj Vasu described in the
Mahabharat and the Indra king Vasu accepted the kingdom of the delightful
Chedi country at the behest of Indra.
The
Chedi country in the Mahabharat, along with many other countries,
has been counted among the variable countries of Kuru. The residents
of Chedi country have been praised in Karna Parv. During the Mahabharat
[Sabha 0 Parv / 29,11-12] Krishna's rival Shishupal was the ruler
of Chedi. Its capital is said to be Shuktmati. In the
Chetti Jatak (Kavel no. 422), the capital of Chedi is called Sotthivatinagar,
which is Sri no. Do de Shuktimti itself five sons Chedinresh the
treatment of the native Htthipur, Asspur, Sihpur, North Panchal
and Dddrpur. There is mention of the resettlement of named towns.
Mahabharat [Asvmedik 0 / 83,2] in Shuktimti the Shuktisahwy has
said.
In
Anguttrnikay a city named Sahjati is regarded in Chedi state. Sahjati
is located ten miles from Allahabad known as Bhita. In the Chettijatak,
there is a nomenclature of Chedinareesh, the last of which seems
to be Vasu mentioned in Parv 63 of Apathar or Apachar, Mahabharat
etc.
Vedwy
native in Cheti or Chedi from Kashi mentions pirates on the road.
The
Vishnu Puran mentions Chediraj Shishupal.
In
Milindapanho, the relation of Cheti or Chedi to the Chetnares is
indicated. Kalingaraj Kharavel was probably the king of this dynasty.
In the Middle Ages, the southern boundary of the Chedi region had
expanded to reach Mekalasuta or Narmada as indicated by Karporamanjari
that Narmada in the rivers, Ranavigrah in kings and Suranand in
the poets are the Bhushans of the Chedin.
Chedi
or Cheti Mahajanapad :
The legendary was one of the 16 Mahajanapads. It was a country near
the Shuktmati river, which included the southern part of Bundelkhand
and the northern part of Jabalpur. It was also among the sixteen
Mahajanapads mentioned in Buddhist texts. The Kalichuri dynasty
also ruled here. Once upon a time Shishupal was the famous king
of this place. He was about to be married to Rukmini that Sri Krishna
had killed Rukmini, only after that when Shree Krishna was given
the first place in Yudhishthr 's Rajasuya Yajna, Shishupal strongly
condemned him. On this, Krishna killed him. The present Chanderi
town in Gwalior region of Madhya PradeshIt is said to be the capital
of Chedi kingdom of ancient times.
Jat
history :
Chedi district was in Bundelkhand. Chedi is also a Jat gotra. At
that time Chandravanshi Shishupal ruled there. Yayati son Yadu tradition
of Krokshtri son Shurasenas reigned. His daughter Kshatrashrav was
married to Chediraj Damaghosh who was born to Shishupal. Nakul married
Karenumati, daughter of Chedi Naresh. From whom the son became Niramitra.
Shishupal was killed by Shri Krishna. His son Chediraj Dhrishketu
fought in the Mahabharat war on behalf of the Pandavs.
Chedi State - Chedi was a state on present day Bundelkhand adjacent
to Yamuna River on the banks of river Shuktmati (Cane). Chedi district
was very powerful. Chedi is also a Jat gotra. King Shishupal was
the ruler of this placein Mahabharat. On the occasion of Rajasuya
Yajna of Maharaj Yudhishthir, Shishupal was killed by Shri Krishna
ji due to his crimes. In the Mahabharat war, Shishupal's Mahabali
son Chediraj Dhritketu fought with one of his Akshohini army on
behalf of the Pandavs. The rule of this Chedi dynasty continued
until the Buddhist period.

Chedi is mentioned in Mahabharat (I.63.2), (II.26.10), (IV.1.9),
(V.72.16), (VI.10.39), (VI.52.13), (VI.112.23), (VI.112.73), (VIII.30.61),
(VIII.51.6).
