KURUKSHETRA
DAY - 14
Knowing
the death of his son Abhimanyu, Arjun vowed to kill Jayadrath on
the morrow before the battle ended at sunset, otherwise he would
throw himself into the fire. During searching Jayadrath in the crowd,
Arjun slew a whole akshouhini, or hundreds of thousands (1,09,350)
of Kaurav soldiers. However, the Kaurav army had protected Jayadrath
very tight hence Arjun could not attack him. Finally in late afternoon
Arjun found Jayadrath, but was guarded by Karna and five other great
warriors. Seeing his friend's plight, in this critical moment Lord
Krishna, his charioteer, raised his Sudarshan Chakra to cover the
Sun, faking a sunset, thus all took off their arms believing the
day had ended and Jayadrath was exposed. As the sun shone last ray
Arjun shot a powerful arrow decapitating Jayadrath.
However
the battle continued past sunset. When the bright moon rose, Ghatotkach,
son of Bhim slaughtered numerous warriors, attacked while flying
in the air. Karna went against him and both fought fiercely until
Karna released the Indrastra, a celestial dart gifted to him by
Indra. Ghatotkach incresed his size and fell on the Kaurav army
killing thousands of soldiers and died.
