V. S. Agrawala writes that Patanjali makes clear the social status of the sudras in his time. Firstly there were sudras who were not excluded from Aryavrat but were living within its social system. Secondly, there was another class of sudras who were living outside Aryavrat and its society. He cites as examples (1) Kishkindha-Gabdikam (2) Shaka-Yavanam and (3) Saurya-Krauncham. Of these

Kishkindha may be identified with Pali Khukhunndo in Gorakhpur

Gabdika with Gaddis of Chamba, who were deemed as living outside the limits of Aryavrat

Saurya with Saureyya or Soron in Etah district and *Kraunch with the later Kraunch-dwar some where in Garhwal.

Kraunch :

Vijayendra Kumar Mathur has written ...

1. Kraunch Island (AS, p.247) :

Kraunch Island is one of the seven continents of Earth according to the mythology of mythological geography. There is a mountain called Kraunch in this island. The residents of Kraunch Island have been described as worshipers of the water god or Varun. The island has a presence of the Ksheer sea around it. According to the Vishnu Puran - 'Jambuplakshahvayu islandau Shamlal Schachaparo Dwij, Kush :, Krauncha Sthatashak: Pushkarasiva Saptam:' (Vishnu Puran 2,2,51).

The island of Kraunch should be considered a part of Tibet according to the position of Mount Kraunch.

2. Kraunch Mountain :

Kraunch mountain is described as one of the seven mountains of Kraunch island mentioned in Vishnupuran 2, 4, 50-51- 'Kraunchashvamasnachthvatrishthachakaraka: Chaturtho Retnashallasya Swahinihyasnibh:.'

This mountain is a part of the Himalayas. It is known from the legend that Parashurama, after ending archery, shot an arrow across the Himalayas and made it across the road. Swans coming south from Mansarovar passed through this route . This route was called ' Cronch Randh '.

In Valmiki Ramayan, Kishkindhakand 43 , 20, Vanar Raj Sugriv, while sending the army of monkeys to the north for the investigation of Sita, while describing the numerous territories there, mentioned 'Kraunchgiri', some distance north of Kailash- 'Krauncha tu Girimasadya' Billam tasya sudurgamam, apramattai: praveshtavya dupapravesham he tatasmrantam 'ie "reaching the Kraunch mountain and reaching its inaccessible bill Indicating to enter with great care, because the road is big insurmountable".

'Re-crunchchasya tu guhashchanya: sanni shikharani ch, dardarashya nitambash vichhetavyaastatasta.' Kishkindhakand 43 , 27 means "to thoroughly explore the other cavities of the Mount Crounch and also the peaks and uplands. The mainak is mentioned next to the Kraunchagiri - 'Caurancha Girimiktramya Manaco Naam Parvat:." Kishkindhakand 43, 27.

The 'Meghdoot' (Uttar Megh 59) also has a beautiful description of the Kraunch foramen- 'Pralayadrerupatat matikramyamatna sthan specially Hansdwaran Bhrigupati Yashovsmai Yatkrauncharandharam.' That is, "On the banks of the Himalayas, there is a valley called Kraunch Randhr, through which the swans come and go; while there is a path to the glory of Parashuram. In the next verse 30, Kailash is described. Thus both Valmiki and Mahakavi Kalidas have both the Kraunch mountain and Cronch Randh is mentioned near Kailash. Elsewhere it has been called 'Kailase Dhandavasse Krauncha: Krauncho Bhabhidhiyate'. Kali-

[p.248]: Das has also instructed the story related to the Kraunch Randh in 'Raghuvansh' 11, 74 - 'Vibhratostramchalelepyakunthitam' meaning "My (Parashuram) could not stop the Astra or Baan (mountain).

In fact, there is a Giridwar in the middle of the Himalayan Mountains and the Kraunch Randh Dundar, which has been described poetically in ancient literature. The Himalayan birds like Hans and Kraunch or Kunj etc. come further south after crossing the lower valleys of the Himalayas in winter. According to Shri Vasudev Sharan Aggarwal, this is the pass of ' Lipulek ' in front of Almora. (D.Kadambini, October '62)

3. Crouchgiri (AS, p.248) :

There is a mountain near Panchavati. 'Gunjatkunjuktirakoshikhayadhvatavatam kikshastambadumarmukmukkulkul: crunchingbhiyani giri:' ReplyRevised 2,19. Kranacharanya was located near it.

In Ramayan :

Kraunchagiri is mentioned Ramayan (4.3.25), (4.3.27), (4.3.29)

Kishkindha Kand Sarga 43 mentions that Sugrev sends troops to north in search of Sita. He gives an account of the snowy regions and provinces of northern side and asks them to search in the places of Yavana, Kuru, and Daradas etc., civilisations. Sugrev specially informs them about a divine province called Uttar Kuru and a mountain called Kraunchagiri near Kailash.

25. "Thereafter on reaching Mt. Krauncha you shall cautiously enter into a highly impassable tunnel of that mountain to search Sita. That tunnel, they say, is an un-enterable one. [4-43-25]

27. "Besides the main peak of Mt. Kraunch, its other peaks, terraces, crevices and midriffs shall be searched, far and wide. [4-43-27]

29. "You all have to search Mt. Kraunch inclusive of its mountain sides, grades, and its fringe mountains, and on moving away from that Mt. Kraunch, a mountain named Mainak is there. [4-43-29].

Jat history :

Thakur Deshraj has written that which group of Aryans settled? Puranic history helps us a lot to solve this question. The Purans have divided the earth into seven islands and each island in seven years (countries). Priyavrat, son of Svayambhu Manu, has done this among his sons. Priyavrat had ten sons, three of whom became ascetic. He divided the total earth on seven. The part that came in the butt of each was called the island. Later, the descendants of these seven sons who were part of their land, it was called the year or period (country). It is well understood from the following description -

Islands - 1. Jambu 2. Shalmali 3. Kush 4. Kraunch 5. Shak 6. Pushkar 7. Plucking .

Officers - 1. Agnidhra 2. Vapushman 3. Jyotishman 4. Dutimana 5. Bhavya 6. Savan 7. Medhatithi.

Kaunch island which Dyutiman had had, he might Terrain in which Shyam , China , Cambodia , Malaya located etc. Pradesh. Here Rudra is said to be worshiped in Purana. Here Rudra was called Tigmi.

Kumudati :

Vijayendra Kumar Mathur has written… Kumudvati (AS, p.204) According to Vishnu Puran 2,4,55, a river of Crounch -island - 'Gauri Kumudvati Chaiv Sandhya Ratarmojva'.

The name of a mountain of Kraunch-island has also been called dark- 'Kraunchashvamanshachaiv Tirthashvandhakaraka' (Vishnupuran 2,4,50).
